Honorees

Every year Construction Vs Cancer recognizes a voice in the community that drives local support for childhood cancer patients, always with compassion to hasten the day of a world without cancer. This year's Compassionate Heart award will be going to John P. McLaury of KB Homes and Southern Nevada Home Builders Association. John P. McLaury has a drive and dedication to the fight against cancer through this event. Year over year, he continues to grow the impact of SNHBA in this fight.

With decades of coping with cancer, as a caregiver and a patient, I am passionate about increasing the awareness of cancer, the importance of annual physicals to catch it early enough to treat it and ultimately, finding a cure. My Mother overcame breast cancer fifty years ago and she lost her battle with colon cancer 10 years ago this past Labor Day.  Because of my Mother’s experiences, I committed to annual physicals at young age and fortunately, during one of my annual exams, my PSA spiked.

Following a biopsy, I learned I had prostate cancer, so I acted quickly to have a prostatectomy and because I caught it so early, the pathology revealed the cancer was totally contained within my prostate; I’ve been cancer free for more than 11 years!

Thank you, John, for your drive and dedication to the fight against cancer through this event. We cannot thank you enough for your passion and hard work to make this event a success.

About Us

In 2021, there will be an estimated 1.9 million new cancer cases diagnosed and 608,570 cancer deaths in the United States, but there is hope. For more than 100 years, The American Cancer Society has been leading the fight to end cancer. With your support, we have helped usher in an era where more people survive cancer than ever before. By translating our research findings into action, we've seen a 31% decline in US cancer death rates since 1991. This includes a 2.4% decline from 2017 to 2018 – a new record for the largest one-year drop in the cancer death rate. These are just some of the findings from the annual statistics reported by the American Cancer Society (ACS).
